URGENT: TELL YOUR MICHIGAN REPRESENTATIVE TO REJECT ANTI-IMMIGRANT BILLS

Last week, the Michigan House Committee on Local Government passed HB 4105 and HB 4334, which together would prohibit local municipalities from passing “welcoming cities” policies, pressure state and local law enforcement to serve as immigration enforcement officers, encourage racial profiling, and punishes local police for adopting policies that limit cooperation between local law enforcement and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers. These bills would take away local police departments’ right to set their own public safety priorities and commitments to protect immigrants who are victims or witnesses of crime.

The full Michigan House plans to consider both bills this week, so right now is a critical time that Michigan House Representatives hear from their constituents who care about immigrants in our communities. This legislation threatens the safety and inclusivity of our state and undermines Michigan’s long-standing commitment to diversity and welcome. These bills would prevent victims or witnesses of a crime from talking to police for fear of being detained or deported, and serve only to breed distrust, discrimination, and family separation.

Take Action TODAY: Call the House Majority Leader and Your State House Representative
Tell Them to Vote No on HB 4105 and HB 4334!

  • Step 1: Contact House Majority Leader Dan Lauwers (R-District 81) at 517-373-1790 or DanLauwers@house.mi.gov
  • Step 2: Find and call your Michigan House Representative by clicking here.

Here’s what you can say: “I’m (name) from (city, county, or congregation) and I’m calling to ask the Representative to oppose HB 4105 and HB 4334. This bill pressures police to turn into immigrant enforcement agents, encourages racial profiling, and takes away local police’s right to set their own public safety priorities that protect all of our community members, regardless of immigration status. As a person of faith, I expect the Representative to take a stand against policies that separate immigrant families and make our communities less safe. My community recognizes the contributions of immigrants that make our state stronger, and I urge you to reflect the diversity and inclusivity of Michigan by voting NO on HB 4105 and HB 4334.”
