Trump-Miller Asylum Rule Sides With the Persecutors

“More People Will Die”

Washington, DC – Yesterday the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security submitted a notice of proposed rulemaking to the Federal Register that proves these governmental bodies stand for neither justice nor safety.

The proposed rule further guts the U.S. legal system of asylum and other protections for people who are fleeing violence and murder in other countries. The goal is to end asylum in the United States administratively, without an act of Congress.

“This is the result of Stephen Miller’s years of work,” said Faith Williams, Associate Director, Government Relations & Advocacy, National Council of Jewish Women, Inc. and Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) Co-Chair. “What could be more evil than cutting human beings off from the lifeline of asylum protections? With this rule, Miller is siding with the persecutors. More people will die because of it. He obviously does not care.”

“In its campaign to end asylum, the Trump administration consistently violates both the law and moral values,” said Elissa Diaz, Policy Associate at Church World Service and IIC Co-Chair. “People of faith and conscience, we need to stand up. Jesus was a refugee. Trump and Miller would turn him away today.”
