Census Memo Aims to Erase Undocumented Immigrants from the United States

by Melissa Stek|Published July 21, 2020

Policy “disrespects immigrants’ hard work and families”

Washington, DC – Once again, the Trump administration is attempting to defy the courts and issue an unconstitutional policy that would “erase” undocumented immigrants from the 2020 Census, and the country.

Faith Williams, Associate Director of Government Relations & Advocacy at the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW) and Interfaith Immigration Coalition (IIC) Co-Chair, said: “Trump’s new Census policy is nonsensical and illegal. It is also an obvious political ploy. When it comes to immigrants, Trump just refuses to follow the law.”

Added Elissa Diaz, Policy Associate at Church World Service and IIC Co-Chair: “Our country accepts and appreciates the hard work of undocumented immigrants, but then our government tries to scare and silence them. This is immoral and yes, illegal. Trump’s memo disrespects immigrants’ hard work and is an affront to them and their families.

“The best counter to Trump’s xenophobia is for everyone who lives in the United States today to make sure they are counted in the 2020 Census.”

The Interfaith Immigration Coalition is made up of 55 national, faith-based organizations brought together across many theological traditions with a common call to seek just policies that lift up the God-given dignity of every individual. In partnership, we work to protect the rights, dignity, and safety of all refugees and migrants.
