Adams on Wolf/Cuccinelli’s illegal appointments per GAO

“It takes a certain kind of callous hypocrisy to profess to stand for law and order while unashamedly breaking it”

Washington, DC – The Government Accountability Office (GAO) concluded that Chad Wolf and Ken Cuccinelli have been unlawfully serving as Acting Secretary of Homeland Security and Acting Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), respectively. A federal court had already ruled the same about Cuccinelli in a lawsuit filed by the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC) and partners, voiding two anti-asylum policies he issued.

Katie Adams, Domestic Policy Advocate for the United Church of Christ said:

The finding by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is being illegally led by Chad Wolf comes as no surprise. Far from the role of protecting the ‘homeland,’ we’ve seen DHS agents terrorize citizens and non-citizens alike across the country for years, fraudulently spend taxpayer dollars on separating families and locking up children, and brazenly abuse the trust of the nation.

It takes a certain kind of callous hypocrisy to profess to stand for law and order while unashamedly breaking it. The Department and the administration cannot be counted on to do the right thing, meaning, it is up to Congress to exert oversight of DHS, recalling the acting secretary immediately and cutting off DHS funding. But Congress can and should do more, including the wholesale dismantling of the Department.
