Background

The first 100 days of the Biden Administration is a critical time for faith communities to take action alongside immigrants’ rights organizations and immigrant leaders. In the coming weeks, there will be an opportunity to push for legislative and administrative reforms that create relief from deportation, move towards citizenship for all, and rebuild the refugee and asylum programs.

We’ve only gotten where we are now because of the tireless work of directly-impacted people, organizers, activists, and people of faith like you. But the fight for immigrant justice is far from over. A hopeful future relies on our continued actions. Take the following actions below and share this toolkit with your friends, family, and faith community to encourage them to speak up for justice, too!

3 Ways to Take Hopeful Action

1. Help Stop Deportations
The Biden Administration’s 100-day moratorium on most deportations was blocked by a TX lawsuit, allowing mass deportations to continue at an alarming rate—especially of Black immigrants and asylum seekers.

  • Sign and share this petition to President Biden to halt imminent deportations and take steps to ensure families remain together and free in the U.S.
  • Amplify on Social Media – Use the sample social media posts in this toolkit to highlight the experiences of Black immigrants and pressure the Biden Administration to immediately suspend deportation flights.
  • Call the Biden Administration and urge them to stop deportations, expulsions, transfers, and to ground all ICE-air related flights.

    • Call the following numbers:
      • The White House (202-456-1111)
      • DHS (202-282-8495)
      • Speaker Pelosi (202-225-4965)
      • Majority Leader Schumer (202-224-6542)
    • Sample Script: Hello, I am calling to demand that you stop the mass deportations of people from Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, Haiti, and elsewhere. President Biden must not return families, individuals, and children to countries experiencing violence and political instability in which their lives are endangered. You have the authority to stop all deportations now. I also urge you to halt all Title 42 expulsions, transfers, and ground all ICE-Air related flights during this global health crisis.
  • Participate in the Black Immigrant Advocacy Week, Feb. 10-12. View the Toolkit to learn more.
    • Feb. 10: Interfaith Vigil: Praying for Justice and Peace for Black Immigrant Lives. Tune in from 5-5:30 pm on the Interfaith Immigration Coalition Facebook page.
    • Feb. 11: Take action for Black asylum seekers and refugees!
    • Feb. 12: End the detention and deportation of Black immigrants! Follow and use the hashtag #Act4BlackImms.
  • Support the Sanctuary Movement by joining the Sanctuary Faith Leader and Lay Leader sign on letter here to ask for all people in sanctuary to be free and to expand administrative relief from deportations.

2. Advocate for Citizenship for All
Immigrants are our neighbors, co-workers, family members, and friends. And many are working on the frontlines fighting COVID-19, helping keep us safe and healthy during this time. Advocate for a pathway to citizenship for these essential workers and all of our undocumented neighbors who call the U.S. home!

  • Sign and share this petition to Congress to advocate for a pathway to citizenship for 11 million undocumented Americans.
  • Attend the next DACA/TPS Prayers Call on Monday, Feb. 15, 1 pm. Receive updates and next steps re: DACA/TPS, and learn how we’ll transition to support #Citizenship4All! RSVP here.
  • Join IIC for “Faith On the Phones,” an action taking place on Thursdays, 5-6 pm ET (Feb. 18-Apr. 29). In partnership with NAKASEC’s 100 Day Campaign for #Citizenship4All, we’ll call Congress to advocate for citizenship for all and an end to detentions and deportations. Register here.

3. Engage Your Faith Community
The movement for immigrant justice relies on the prophetic voice and advocacy of faith communities. As the immigration landscape continues to change under the new administration, it is vital that faith communities remain informed and mobilized.

  • Refugee Shabbat is an opportunity for Jewish congregations, organizations, and individuals to dedicate a Shabbat experience this spring to refugees and asylum seekers.
  • Lent Devotions. Journey with the IIC through Lent, a religious season in the Christian tradition that extends between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Our Lenten devotional reflects on nine values that ground the work of immigration justice; each one features scripture, stories, action opportunities, and more. Sign up here to receive the materials once they’re ready!
  • Share this Toolkit with your faith community on social media, in a newsletter or weekly bulletin, and elsewhere to encourage others to take action for immigrant justice.
